Samsung may have revealed which main camera the S25 and S25 Plus flagships will get

Samsung today announced three new camera sensors for smartphones. They are the 200MP ISOCELL HP9, the 50MP ISOCELL JN5 and the 50MP ISOCELL GNJ. The latter could be built into the upcoming S25 and S25+, as its specifications are similar to the main sensor built into the S24 and S24+.

Here's What We Know

The GNJ sensor has a 50MP resolution, 1/1.57-inch size, and 1-micron pixels. Innovations include an improved Anti-Refractive Layer (ARL), which should promote better light capture and colour accuracy by not over-lighting dark areas and reducing unwanted reflections, while the presence of two photodiodes in each pixel ensures fast focusing. ISOCELL GNJ also promises increased energy efficiency, improving performance by 29% in preview mode and 34% in 4K video.

Another notable sensor, the ISOCELL HP9, is the industry's first 200-megapixel telephoto sensor, which is most likely already used in the vivo X100 Ultra's periscopic lens. It features a 1/1.4-inch sensor size and 0.56-micron pixels. With a special high refractive index microlens, the HP9 improves light-gathering ability by directing more light to the RGB colour filter. This results in brighter colour reproduction and improved focusing with a 12% improvement in light sensitivity and a 10% improvement in autofocus contrast compared to the previous sensor.

Samsung says the HP9 excels in low-light conditions, solving a common problem with traditional telephoto cameras. Tetrapixel technology combines 16 pixels into one large virtual pixel measuring 2.24 microns, providing sharper portrait shots in low-light conditions.

ISOCELL HP9

The ISOCELL JN5, the latest sensor announced, offers 50MP resolution, 1/2.76-inch sensor size and pixels measuring 0.64 microns. It has received dual vertical transfer technology (VTG) to improve charge transfer within the pixels and reduce noise in extremely low-light conditions. Samsung also highlights Super Quad Phase Detection technology in the JN5 to improve autofocus for fast moving subjects .This sensor is suitable for use as a primary, ultra wide angle, telephoto or front camera due to its small size.

Samsung has not officially announced when and in which smartphones the mentioned sensors will appear.
