Ukraine is developing AI drones that will operate in swarm mode and recognise enemy uniforms

A Ukrainian tech startup has developed artificially intelligent drones that can be programmed to recognise and target specific uniforms.

Here's What We Know

The new drones are able to work in a swarm system, exchange information with each other and quickly decide where to attack. However, for security reasons, the developer has created the possibility for UAVs to wait for human confirmation before launching a coordinated attack.

In addition to precision strikes, the new systems can conduct intelligence-gathering operations "faster than any human." Once deployed, the swarm of drones is expected to give Ukraine a significant advantage on the battlefield against Russian forces.

According to Serhiy Kupriyenko, the founder of an unnamed Ukrainian firm, the drone swarm solution was developed with one main goal in mind: "to make robots do the fighting" instead of humans.

Ukraine understands that in order to gain an advantage over Moscow's occupation forces, it needs to invest in new technologies while avoiding greater military losses. A recent article in The Times showed that before the invasion in February 2022, there were only about 20 military technology companies in Kyiv. Now there are more than 200 organisations focusing on defence technology, especially autonomous systems.

"They [the Russians] are fighting, dying, sending people - they don't care. But that's not how we perceive war," said Oleksiy Borniakov, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation.
