Moving to London for a semester and need advice on the best vpn for uk streaming/banking/etc??

My university says I "must" use their provided VPN for academic resources, but I've heard horror stories about school VPNs logging literally everything. Plus I want to keep watching my US streaming services (Hulu/Max/etc) while abroad without getting region-blocked. Also need something secure for online banking and stuff. Any Americans who've studied in UK recently have recommendations? Tech blogs seem to just recommend whatever company sponsors them. Looking for actual experiences from real users, especially with streaming reliability and overall security. Also curious if I'd need to stay connected 24/7 or just for specific activities?

Lived in london for 7 months last year, university vpns are TRASH. they log everything, throttle streaming sites, and randomly disconnect during peak hours. Get your own 100%. UK internet surprisingly decent tho, better than my connection back in LA

The university VPN is strictly for accessing academic journals and library resources. NEVER use it for personal browsing, streaming, or banking. They don't even hide that they monitor everything - it's usually disclosed in the terms nobody reads. Source: I work in higher ed IT

Crucial tip nobody mentions: test whatever vpn you choose BEFORE leaving the states! sign up, configure everything while still home. Nothing worse than arriving overseas and discovering your chosen service doesn't work. Ask me how i know... cries in wasted £59

Make sure to download the apps for all your banking/important services BEFORE leaving US. Many send security alerts when accessed from new country even with VPN. TD Bank locked me out for "suspicious login from London" despite using VPN with US server. Nightmare to verify identity overseas

why pay for vpn when smart dns services exist? half the price, faster speeds, no encryption overhead slowing connection. perfect for streaming geo-restricted content. unless you're doing something sketchy, dns solution > vpn for 90% of study abroad needs

Banking tip: notify your bank BEFORE leaving that you'll be in UK. VPN won't help if they've already flagged your account for overseas transactions. Mine froze my card despite using US-based VPN because physical card was swiped in London store

This advice saved me major headache in Barcelona! Called my credit union beforehand, they noted my account, zero issues entire semester. Friends who skipped this step spent hours on international calls begging for access to their own money

Ignored advice about getting proper vpn before leaving for exchange program. Finally caved week 3 when university wifi blocked half the sites i needed. Honestly nordvpn solved everything immediately - streaming worked, banking stopped sending security alerts, and speeds stayed solid even during evening netflix hours

Studied at LSE last year. Counterintuitive advice: Don't stay VPN-connected 24/7. UK internet generally secure for everyday browsing, plus constant VPN raises flags with some services. I used VPN specifically for: 1) US streaming 2) Banking 3) Sketchy public WiFi. Otherwise stayed disconnected for better speeds

lmao watching americans discover they can't access their full hulu/max libraries abroad. Welcome to how rest of world lives with fraction of your content! That said: smart tv/roku/firestick often have hardcoded dns that bypasses vpn. Might need router-level solution not just app

Completely different perspective: I didn't use VPN at all during my Oxford year. Embraced BBC iPlayer/UK Netflix instead of clinging to US content, used mobile banking app with built-in security, had zero issues. Sometimes solutions create more problems than they solve

Watch out for the DNS leak vulnerability when choosing any VPN service. Even premium providers sometimes fail this critical security test, potentially exposing your browsing activities despite the encrypted tunnel. Always verify your chosen service prevents DNS leaks before trusting it with sensitive activities
