Samsung becomes the second largest tablet brand in the US in the first quarter of 2024

Samsung became the second largest tablet brand in the US in the first quarter of 2024, behind only Apple. The South Korean company managed to increase its market share by 2% year-on-year to 18.5%.

Here's What We Know

A new report from Canalys shows that Samsung sold 1.8 million Galaxy Tab devices in the first quarter of 2024, accounting for 18.5% of the market. This is a 2% increase compared to the first quarter of 2023, when the corporation sold 1.76 million tablets, accounting for 16.3% of the market share.

In the previous quarter, Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab A9+, Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ in the US. The tech giant also offers the Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Tab S9+ and Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra for those looking for high-end tablets with OLED screens and flagship performance.

Apple remained the market leader with 4.92 million iPad shipments, capturing the majority (50.8%) of the US tablet market. However, these figures are down 8.8% from last year, when 5.4 million iPads were sold. Apple's market share may increase by the end of the second quarter of 2024 thanks to the new iPad Pro line with Tandem OLED panels.

Successes of other brands

  • Amazon, which offers affordable Fire tablets, sold 1.6 million tablets in the first quarter of 2024, with a 16.5% market share, down 21.5% from the first quarter of 2023.
  • TCL sold only 389 thousand tablets, capturing 4% of the market, down 35.4% compared to the first quarter of 2023.
  • Microsoft bought 262 thousand Windows Surface tablets, taking 2.7% of the market in the first quarter of 2024, down 30.1% year-on-year.

Samsung is unlikely to introduce new high-end tablets this year, as the company usually releases such devices every 1.5 years. The next Galaxy Tab S10 is likely to be unveiled early next year.
