Germany approves large-scale purchase of 105 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks
The German parliament has approved the purchase of 105 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks, which will significantly strengthen the capabilities of the Bundeswehr.
Here's What We Know
This decision follows a framework agreement concluded in May 2023 with KNDS Deutschland. Germany initially ordered 18 tanks under this agreement, and with the latest approval, 105 tanks will now be purchased. However, this development means that other countries will not be able to access the framework agreement as originally planned.
The Leopard 2A8 is an improvement on the Leopard 2 A7V and is the most advanced tank in the Bundeswehr's arsenal. Key upgrades to the Leopard 2A8 include the integration of the Trophy active protection system, improved armour with a higher level of protection, a new engine that offers approximately 100 more horsepower, a new 360° radar system and other improvements.
Given that this is a modification rather than a completely new development, the first Leopard 2A8 is expected to be available by 2025. The urgency for rapid delivery is underscored by internal Bundeswehr assessments that indicate Russia could be sufficiently rearmed to effectively challenge NATO within the next five years.
Thus, the acquisition of these additional 105 tanks is a crucial step in addressing the existing gaps in the army. In addition, this number of tanks provides a better outlook for the newly established German brigade in Lithuania.
