Qualcomm's new flagship processor could cost up to $240

The next generation of Qualcomm's mobile processor, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, will be significantly more expensive than its predecessor. According to insider Yogesh Brar, the price of the new chipset could reach USD 240, which is 25-30% more than the price of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Here's What We Know

The price increase is associated with several factors. Firstly, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be manufactured using TSMC's new 3nm N3E process, which is more expensive than the 4nm process used in Gen 3.

Second, Qualcomm will replace the ARM cores in Gen 3 with its own Oryon cores. This change has likely resulted in significant R&D costs, which will likely be included in the final price of the chipset.

In addition to the price increase, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to have a number of other improvements:

  • Improved performance: The new Oryon core and 3nm process technology should provide significant performance gains for the CPU and GPU.
  • Improved energy efficiency: The 3nm process should also result in improved power efficiency, which could lead to longer battery life for smartphones.
  • Support for new features: The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is likely to support new features such as 5G mmWave, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth LE Audio.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to be officially unveiled at the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit, which will take place in October 2024. The first smartphones with the new chipset are likely to hit the market in early 2025.
