Microsoft and Apple give up seats on OpenAI's board of directors
Microsoft and Apple have decided to step down from the board of directors of artificial intelligence research organisation OpenAI. This decision was made shortly after the European Commission began reviewing the terms of their partnership with OpenAI.
Here's What We Know
Microsoft, which has previously invested $1 billion in OpenAI and subsequent investments up to a total of $13 billion, said its role on the board as a non-voting observer is no longer required given the confidence in the company's direction. Apple, which plans to integrate ChatGPT into its devices, also declined to take an observer seat.
The European Commission is continuing its antitrust investigation into the relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI, and is also seeking additional information from other major players in the artificial intelligence field, including Meta, Google and TikTok. The main purpose of the investigation is to ensure fairness in consumer choice and to verify the terms of the merger to avoid adversely affecting competitors.
