Insider: iPhone 17 won't get a 2-nanometre chipset

The iPhone 16 lineup has yet to be released, but rumours about the next generation iPhone 17 are already starting to emerge. A new leak reveals information about the processor for future models.

Here's What We Know

According to a Mobile chip expert insider from Weibo, the iPhone 17 will not feature a 2nm chipset due to technological limitations. TSMC was expected to start mass producing 2nm chips next year, but now it's reported that they won't be ready until the end of 2025. This means that the iPhone 17 will continue to use TSMC's 3nm processor.

TSMC is currently accelerating the development of 2nm chips to ensure a stable output for mass production, given that Apple is one of the company's biggest customers. The 2nm processor is expected to deliver a 10-15% speed increase at the same power consumption or a 25-30% power reduction at the same speed compared to 3nm chips. The current A17 Pro chip used in the iPhone 15 Pro is made using the 3nm process, while the newer M4 chip for the 2024 iPad Pro is made using the second generation of the 3nm process.
