Google Pixel can get two years of free satellite communication for emergencies

The ability to send text messages via satellite in the absence of cellular coverage may be available in Pixel smartphones in the near future.

Here's What We Know

The data obtained from Android 15 Beta 4 indicates that Google is actively working on the introduction of a satellite communication function for emergency calls in its smartphones. This feature is likely to be called "Pixel Satellite SOS" and is expected to be available on the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold models.

Satellite communication will be limited to text messages sent via Google Messages. Google may offer two years of free service, similar to Apple.

The feature may not be available at the time of the Pixel 9 launch or may be limited to certain regions. A software update may be required to activate Pixel Satellite SOS on eligible devices.

In addition to Google, Samsung is also preparing to add satellite connectivity to its Galaxy phones.

Both companies are expected to reveal more information about their satellite plans in the near future.
