Telegram has reached 950 million users and plans to launch an app shop

Messenger Telegram has reached 950 million active users and plans to cross the mark of 1 billion this year, the company's founder Pavel Durov said.

Here's What We Know

This month, the company intends to launch an app shop and an inbuilt browser with support for web3 pages. Telegram is actively adopting web3 technologies, supporting cryptocurrency and blockchain initiatives. In December 2022, the company began auctioning usernames on the TON blockchain and has since focused on helping developers create mini-apps and games that use cryptocurrency.

Telegram has also started sharing ad revenue with channel owners by giving away toncoin (a token on the TON blockchain). However, the platform is facing fraud issues with scammers actively selling various schemes to steal toncoins from users.

To combat this, Telegram plans to display the month of registration and primary country for public accounts, and allow organisations to use mini-apps to issue tokens for channels, creating a decentralised trading platform for third-party verification.
