RCS: Samsung reveals the reason for abandoning the Samsung Messages app

Recently, it was reported that Samsung phones with One UI 6.1.1 no longer come pre-installed with the Samsung Messages app in some countries. Samsung has decided to explain why they have abandoned their standard messaging app in favour of Google Messages.

Here's What We Know

According to Android Authority, Samsung is looking to improve the implementation of the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol. The company believes that using Google Messages as the default messaging app will accelerate RCS adoption and provide Galaxy users with a more robust and engaging mobile communication experience.

Samsung and Google are working together to make Google Messages the standard messaging application on Android phones. The move is aimed at accelerating the adoption of Rich Communication Services (RCS), which offers more advanced and convenient features than SMS and MMS.

Although this change is currently only affecting the US market, a Samsung spokesperson hinted that the company may take similar measures in other countries. More details will be released in the coming months.

What is RCS and why is it important?

RCS is a new generation of messaging protocol that significantly improves the capabilities of SMS and MMS. It allows you to send and receive text, high-resolution images and videos, emojis, stickers and location information. Additionally, RCS offers advanced messaging features such as real-time read/view indicators, text entry, replies to individual messages, and enhanced security. These features are also available for group chats.
