The free Gemini tier now works on the basis of 1.5 Flash

At I/O 2024, Gemini Advanced started using 1.5 Pro, and Google is now updating the free version of Gemini 1.5 Flash.

Here's What We Know

Google announced Gemini 1.5 Flash in May as its fastest and most versatile multimodal AI model. A new version of the Gemini 1.5 Flash AI model was introduced in May as the fastest and most convenient model for various tasks. Compared to 1.5 Pro, it is lighter in weight but retains multimodal reasoning capabilities. The model can process information from various sources, such as text, images, and other data types.

The context window has been increased 4 times to 32,000 tokens, and Gemini Advanced still offers 1 million for longer conversations and more complex questions. Meanwhile, Gemini will soon add the ability for free users to upload files to Gemini for analysis.

This means that users will be able to do things like upload their economics textbook and ask Gemini to create practice questions. Gemini will also be able to analyse data files, allowing you to discover insights and visualise them with charts and graphs.

Gemini 1.5 Flash is now available to all free users on mobile devices and the web in 40 languages in over 230 countries.

Meanwhile, Gemini Answers now shows links to similar content for fact-finding prompts. At the end of a paragraph, click on the feature to see websites where you can dive deeper into a particular topic. It will also work with the Gmail extension to display inline links to related emails.

Gemini in Google Messages is now gradually rolling out in the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK, and Switzerland. Languages such as French, Polish, and Spanish are now supported.

The Gemini app is also available in: Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel, Kenya, Romania, Serbia, Suriname, Tanzania, Ukraine, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Eritrea.
