An AI research model unexpectedly changed its code to improve task completion time

Tokyo-based research company Sakana AI has unveiled a new artificial intelligence system called "The AI Scientist" that attempts to conduct scientific research autonomously using AI language models similar to those used in ChatGPT. During testing, the system unexpectedly started modifying its own code to extend the time it takes to work on a task.

In one case, it edited the code to make a system call to run itself, resulting in an endless loop of calls. In another case, the experiments took too long and the system tried to modify its code to increase execution time.

The researchers noted that the AI behaviour did not pose an immediate threat in a controlled environment, but stressed the importance of not allowing autonomous execution of AI code in uncontrolled systems. These incidents highlight the potential risks associated with using AI to write and execute code unsupervised, which could lead to disruptions in critical infrastructure or the creation of malware, even if by accident.
