Samsung Display and leading tech giants Intel and Qualcomm join forces to perfect OLED displays in notebooks
Samsung Display, the world's largest manufacturer of small and medium-sized OLED panels, is actively working with Intel and Qualcomm to improve the use of OLED displays in laptops.
Here's What We Know
Samsung has been using OLED displays in its premium laptops for 4 years now and intends to further increase its presence in the market. At the Korea Display Exhibition, Samsung Display CEO Choi Joo-sun said that technology, production scale and customer co-operation are important to strengthen competitiveness in the notebook market.
The company recently began supplying Tandem OLED panels for Apple's new iPad Pro and plans to supply OLED panels for future iPad Air and iPad Mini models as well as future MacBooks. To meet the growing demand for OLED panels in laptops, Samsung Display will invest 4.1 trillion Korean won (about $3 billion) to build a new 8.6-generation OLED production line by 2026 that will be able to produce more than 10 million OLED panels per year.
While LG Display has already introduced its Tandem OLED panels for laptops, Samsung Display is still lagging behind, but being the largest OLED panel maker, the company will soon catch up.
