Sweden wants to move from direct arms transfers to Ukraine to production on its territory
Swedish Defence Minister Paul Jonson said that his country would change its approach to military assistance to Ukraine by setting up production facilities on its territory.
Here's What We Know
According to him, this will be facilitated by the presence of the Swedish Defence Procurement Agency (FMV) in Ukraine since autumn this year.
The head of the Swedish Defence Ministry stressed that when FMV starts working in Ukraine, it will be civilian personnel whose work will be fully compliant with international law.
At the same time, the organisation of defence production at facilities in Ukraine will help strengthen support for the Ukrainian army without reducing the capabilities of Sweden itself, which has already provided 16 packages of military assistance and has already depleted its own arsenals.
Interestingly, Jonson also said that the decision to launch arms production in Ukraine came against the backdrop of another important event - the entry into force of the US-Sweden Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA).
Under the agreement, the US military will have access to 17 bases, airfields and seaports in Sweden, and allows for the storage of US Army equipment and weapons on Swedish territory.
