Russia pays up to $4,000 a month to people digging trenches to hold back Ukraine's offensive

According to job postings on job sites, the military is looking for people to dig fortifications in the Kursk border area.

Here's What We Know

Russians are willing to pay from 150,000 rubles to 371,000 rubles, which is about $1,600-4,000 a month.

Of course, this happened after Ukraine launched a bold attack on Kursk last week, taking the Russian army by surprise. According to experts, Russia's response to the attack has been hampered by confusion over command structures and inexperience.

But Russia is deploying additional forces in the region and building fortifications to stop Ukraine from advancing further. The Kremlin has declared a state of emergency and evacuated 132,000 people from Kursk and neighbouring Belgorod.

The Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, said on Wednesday that satellite images showed Russia digging fortifications "including trenches and anti-tank defences" about 16km from Ukraine's positions near Kursk.
