Italy to buy six MQ-9 Reaper drones from the US for $738 million

Italy has received US permission to purchase MQ-9 Reaper drones from General Atomics.

Here's What We Know

The potential deal is valued at $738 million and includes the supply of six Block 5 Reaper drones and three mobile ground control stations. Twelve multispectral targeting systems and nine AN/APY-8 synthetic aperture radars will also be delivered to Rome if the sale goes through.

General Atomics will also provide the necessary maintenance services, personnel training and related spare parts.

According to the U.S. Defence Security Cooperation Agency, the proposed sale "will support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a NATO ally."

The announcement of the sale of drones to Italy did not specify a timeframe, but we can assume that Rome will receive the MQ-9 in a few years.

Flashback

The MQ-9 Block 5 is an improved version of the US Air Force's MQ-9 Reaper drone. It has improved avionics, power and increased payload. The 950 horsepower turboprop engine allows the drone to reach a maximum speed of 480 km per hour. In addition, the Block 5 variant boasts an extended operating range of 1,800 km thanks to an increased internal fuel capacity.
