Waymo unveils new 6th generation hardware for autonomous taxis

Waymo has unveiled its new 6th generation hardware, which promises significantly reduced cost and increased efficiency.

Here's What We Know

Waymo's new sensor suite includes 13 cameras, four lidars, and six radars. It also includes new external microphones and improved computing hardware, which is no longer located in the trunk, as it was before.

This allows the cars to navigate a variety of road conditions even more accurately than before.

Previously, the Jaguar I-Pace and Chrysler Pacifica models used 29 cameras, five lidars and six radars. The new kit has reduced the number of sensors thanks to improved technology and a new arrangement of equipment.

Despite the reduced number of sensors, the system provides improved surround vision and can operate effectively during the day, night and in bad weather conditions.

The new hardware has already completed thousands of miles of real-world driving and millions of miles of simulations, and Waymo expects unmanned autonomous vehicles to become a reality in about half the time. It also accelerates the development of new generations of Waymo Driver technology.
