Canada to buy AIM-9X Sidewinder tactical missiles from the US for $265 million

The US Department of State has approved Canada's proposal to purchase hundreds of AIM-9X Sidewinder tactical missiles from the US company RTX.

Here's What We Know

With an estimated value of $265 million, the potential sale includes 120 Sidewinder units in the Block II configuration and 48 units in the more advanced Block II+ configuration.

Ottawa also wants 96 training missiles, 20 targeting kits, active optical target detectors, and engineering and logistical support.

According to the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency, the sale will help strengthen Canada's defence capabilities in the region. The deal is also likely to improve the country's relations with the United States.

"This proposed sale will support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by contributing to the military capabilities of a NATO ally that is an important force for political stability and economic progress," the statement said.
