Samsung Galaxy Ring: a smart ring that can't be repaired

Samsung released its first smart Galaxy Ring this summer, but as it turns out, it's impossible to repair. According to a breakdown from iFixit, in order to get to the insides of the device, you have to destroy its outer shell.

Here's What We Know

Inside the ring are tiny components, including a tiny battery, soldered to a flexible circuit board. Because of its compact design and use of plastic and resin, it's impossible to repair the Galaxy Ring without destroying it.

While this doesn't come as a surprise to most users, the issue of unrepairability raises questions about the future of the device. When the battery stops holding a charge, the ring will become useless. Samsung may address this issue by offering an exchange programme for Galaxy Ring users to minimise potential e-waste. However, it is not yet known what steps the company will take in this direction.
