All Google Pixel 9 phones have UFS 3.1 memory format instead of UFS 4.0, but Google has a solution to this issue

Google has confirmed that all Pixel 9 models will use UFS 3.1 memory instead of the faster UFS 4.0. This decision came as a surprise as UFS 3.1 is usually used in mid-range smartphones to keep costs down, while flagship devices are equipped with more modern standards.

Here's What We Know

Tests have shown that the Pixel 9's read and write speeds are significantly slower compared to its competitors. For example, the base model achieves 980 MB/s and the Pixel 9 Pro XL achieves 911 MB/s, while the Zenfone 11 Ultra with UFS 4.0 achieves 2130 MB/s.

Despite this, however, most users may not notice the difference between UFS 3.1 and UFS 4.0 memory formats. For example, recording 8K 60 fps video requires 750 MB/s, but thanks to video compression, the Pixel 9 manages this at 100 MB/s. Also, thanks to Google's big AI module, the image quality doesn't suffer. Therefore, Google's excellent UI optimisation and tweaks could override any shortcomings of the outdated UFS 3.1 memory format.
