Threads tests temporary posts that disappear after 24 hours

Meta-owned social network Threads has announced that it is testing a new format of posts that automatically disappear after 24 hours. Earlier this month, the company announced internal testing of this functionality, but now it is expanding the experiment to a limited number of users.

Here's What We Know

Posts that disappear after a day allow you to share moments that quickly lose relevance. When a post becomes visible, a banner will appear at the top of the page, informing you that the post and all replies will disappear after a certain time. Quoted posts will also disappear along with the original post.

Earlier, developer Alessandro Paluzzi showed a screenshot of a button for publishing temporary posts. Technologist Crist Messina also found clues to this functionality in the iOS app code earlier this month. It is noted that such posts will not be transferred to fediverse due to restrictions on deletion from other ActivityPub servers.

Such posts can be useful for content creators who want to share short-term or intermittent content, as well as for commenting on live events.

In 2020, Twitter launched a similar format of disappearing posts called Fleets, but shut it down in 2021 due to low usage.

If Threads decides to make this feature available to everyone, it will become one of the few social networks to introduce such a feature among competitors such as X, Bluesky, and Mastodon.
