Insider: Basic Mac models with M4 chip can get 16GB of RAM

According to a new report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the base model of future Apple Macs may for the first time start with 16GB of RAM by default, breaking an eight-year Apple tradition.

Currently, the standard is 8 GB, which was introduced in 2016 with the MacBook Air.

Gourmet reports that new Macs with the M4 chip are being tested with 16 or 32 GB of RAM. This could mean that the base model will come with 16 GB of memory at no extra cost, which previously amounted to $200. The maximum amount of RAM for the M4 chip will be 32 GB, while the M3 chip has a maximum of 24 GB.

The tested configurations also use 8-core processors and GPUs, which may differ from the M4 chip versions in the iPad Pro, where smaller versions have a 9-core processor and 10-core GPU. The fully unlocked M4 chip in the Mac will have a 10-core processor and 10-core GPU, just like the iPad Pro.

While Gurman doesn't mention details about the M4 Pro and M4 Max, Apple is expected to introduce new M4-powered Macs later this year, including the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac. The rest of the lineup could arrive in 2025.
