Meta blocks Iranian WhatsApp hacker accounts that tried to launch phishing attacks on politicians and diplomats

Meta has blocked WhatsApp accounts used by Iranian hackers for phishing attempts.

Here's What We Know

The hackers posed as technical support representatives of well-known companies such as AOL, Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft. Their attacks targeted people in Israel, Palestine, Iran, the US and the UK, including political figures associated with presidential campaigns.

Meta said that the hackers' efforts did not compromise accounts and the company found no evidence of successful attacks. It also reported the incidents to law enforcement agencies and corporations.

Google has also previously recorded unsuccessful attempts by the same APT42 group to attack senior US officials. Among them were members of President Biden's team, former President Trump and his confidant Roger Stone. Stone has already been a victim of phishing: his account was compromised and hackers used it to attack others.
