Apple Podcasts is no longer No. 1 among podcast listening apps, ceding the lead to YouTube and Spotify

The latest research and rankings show that Apple Podcasts is no longer the most popular app for listening to podcasts.

Here's What We Know

According to a study by Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights, YouTube ranked first among podcast listening platforms in the US, with 31% of users. Spotify is in second place with 21%, and Apple Podcasts dropped to third place with 12%.

Apple Podcasts had a 30% share in 2019, but has since dropped significantly. Despite this, Apple continues to lead in podcast downloads. Historically, Apple has played a key role in popularising podcasts, starting with the iPod. However, with the growing popularity of the video format, many users prefer YouTube, where they can not only listen to but also watch podcasts. This change emphasises the importance of adapting to new formats and audience preferences.
