Samsung could be a potential buyer of Nokia's mobile network business
The Finnish company Nokia, known for its mobile phones, is again in a difficult situation. Nokia's mobile network business is no longer as profitable as it was 4 years ago, when CEO Pekka Lundmark tried to resuscitate it.
Here's What We Know
According to Bloomberg, Nokia is considering several options to save its mobile networking business, including a sale, a merger with a competitor or a complete separation. Among the potential buyers mentioned is Samsung, which is looking to strengthen its position in telecoms infrastructure.
A Nokia spokesman said the company has made significant progress in sizing up its cost base, defending its product roadmap and closing new deals. But demand from network operators for 5G infrastructure has declined and the company is looking for other avenues of growth.
Nokia's mobile network assets are valued at $10 billion, which is a small amount for a giant like Samsung. However, no decisions have been made yet and Samsung is refraining from commenting. Nokia is also looking for new business opportunities that don't depend on building networks for operators.
