US orders additional HIMARS missiles worth over $3bn
The United States has ordered a batch of GMLRS precision guided missiles for HIMARS worth more than $3 billion.
Here's What We Know
The US Department of Defence has announced that it has signed an agreement with Lockheed Martin for the production of the projectiles. Locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of October 2027.
No details on the volume of procurement are available yet, but the March 2023 solicitation called for $886 million and 5,016 GMLRS guided missiles.
This contract is part of the recently announced US plans to sharply increase production of GMLRS artillery ammunition and shells. In 2023, the Pentagon's Vice Chairman of the Army said that the US plans to increase their production sixfold over the next five years.
It is worth noting that these projectiles are equipped with a satellite guidance system and can hit targets up to 80 km away.
