India approves large-scale purchase of defence equipment worth $17 billion

India's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved a major $17bn purchase of military equipment to boost the country's defence capabilities.

The DAC has recognised 10 acquisition proposals as necessary. They also announced the start of the procurement process.

Among the most important weapons that have been approved are Future Fighting Vehicles (FRCVs), which are expected to modernise the Indian Army's tank fleet. These vehicles will provide mobility and multi-level protection to meet the challenges of modern warfare.

In addition, the DAC approved a plan to purchase air defence radars to detect and track air targets.

The multibillion-dollar investment is a strategic move by New Delhi as it seeks to strengthen its land, air and naval capabilities. The country will also purchase Forward Repair Team tracked vehicles to carry out repairs in the field during mechanised operations.

India is also making numerous investments in its navy, including the procurement of fast patrol vessels and maritime patrol vessels for missions in challenging sea conditions. In addition, the DAC has given the green light to the Indian Air Force to purchase Dornier-228 aircraft.
