AMD will release a new Z2 Extreme chip for portable consoles early next year, which could see serious improvements in battery life

AMD plans to introduce a new Z2 Extreme console chip in early 2025, which will be the successor to the Ryzen Z1 Extreme used in Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go devices. The announcement was made by Jack Huynh, AMD's head of computing and graphics technologies, at IFA in Berlin. An AMD representative confirmed that the company is working with several partners, and the chip is probably already in the hands of portable device manufacturers.

Here's What We Know

The Z2 Extreme is expected to be based on AMD's Strix Point architecture, which promises improved Zen 5 performance. However, it is not yet known how this will affect battery life. Huynh has expressed his desire for devices to be able to run for up to three hours on a single charge, which is well beyond the current 45 minutes.

Portable devices like the ROG Ally and Legion Go draw up to 50W, which drains their batteries in less than an hour. It's possible AMD will create a custom chip for portable devices to improve battery life. This could be a significant step forward for portable gaming consoles.
