Insider: Apple plans to release smart glasses without augmented reality before 2027
Apple is working on smart glasses without augmented reality (AR) features. This product is expected to compete with Meta Ray-Ban, which costs $299. Earlier this year, it was reported that Apple was resuming work on AR glasses, but their launch is not expected before 2027.
Here's What We Know
Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman noted in his Power On newsletter that Apple could create smart glasses without AR technologies. He suggests that Apple may follow the approach of Meta, which already has successful glasses with a camera (for photos, videos, and live streaming), built-in speakers, AI chatbot, music playback, and the ability to receive calls, but without AR.
The absence of AR technology will allow Apple to reduce production costs, which may lead to a lower cost and faster time to market. Glasses without AR are likely to be less bulky and have better battery life.
Recently, Qualcomm's CEO confirmed that Samsung is also working on XR smart glasses. Samsung's product will be powered by Google's software.
