AMD's new VGM technology allows up to 75% of RAM to be allocated to video memory

AMD has announced Variable Graphics Memory (VGM) technology that allows notebook users to reallocate RAM to improve graphics performance.

Here's How It Works

The technology is only available so far for laptops with AMD AI 300 Strix Point chips. Owners of such laptops will now be able to allocate up to 75% of system memory as video memory using the AMD Adrenalin application. For example, a laptop with 32GB of RAM and 512MB of video memory can turn into a device with 24GB of RAM and 8GB of video memory.

This feature is especially useful for games that require large amounts of video memory, such as Alan Wake II. In tests on an Asus Zenbook S 16 laptop with Variable Graphics Memory enabled, performance in the game Control increased from 54 to 65 frames per second. However, not all games showed a significant improvement.

AMD also introduced Fluid Motion Frames 2 technology, which increases frame rates, creating new frames with lower latency. When combined with Variable Graphics Memory and FSR technology, laptops can achieve significant performance improvements, for example, the Horizon Zero Dawn game can increase its frame rate from 39 to 66 frames per second.
