iPhone 16 Pro supports ProRAW photos in JPEG-XL format

The iPhone 16 Pro will get a new feature that 9to5Mac reported before the official launch. The new Pro models will be able to shoot ProRAW photos in JPEG-XL format.

Here's What We Know

Data obtained from the iPhone 16 Pro firmware confirms that users will be able to save images in JPEG-XL format in the ProRAW settings. This format allows you to effectively compress RAW images without losing quality, reducing file size.

JPEG-XL also supports advanced features such as transparency, HDR, and a wider colour gamut.

File options and sizes

iPhone 16 Pro lets you choose from the following options for saving images

  • Lossless JPEG (most compatible)
  • JPEG-XL with loss
  • JPEG-XL lossless

File sizes for different options:

  • 11 MB for JPEG-XL Lossy ProRAW at 12 MP
  • 18 MB for JPEG-XL Lossless ProRAW at 12 MP
  • 20 MB for JPEG-XL Lossless ProRAW at 48 MP
  • 46 MB for JPEG-XL Lossless ProRAW at 48 MP

For comparison, a 48MP ProRAW photo from the iPhone 15 Pro takes about 75MB.

Although JPEG-XL shooting is only available for iPhone 16 Pro, all Apple devices running iOS 17 and later or macOS 14 and later can view images in this format.

The iPhone 16 Pro also has several new camera features, including 4K video recording at 120 frames per second and new photo styles with real-time colour, highlights and shadows adjustment. The model also features a new 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens.

The iPhone 16 is already available for pre-order, and the official launch is scheduled for next Friday, 20 September.
