Grasshopper CEO Suda51 says people are 'overly concerned' about Metacritic scores
Goichi Suda believes that the obsession with Metacritic scores is stifling the creation of original games. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Suda, along with Shinji Mikami, expressed concern about the decline in the number of unique games in recent years.
Here's What We Know
According to Suda, developers and publishers are too focused on chasing high Metacritic ratings, which makes them play it safe by following traditional formulas. This, in his opinion, hinders innovation and limits creative risk-taking.
Mikami added that while original games still exist, they are often overshadowed by big-budget games with massive marketing campaigns. He noted that games with a wider audience tend to receive more advertising support, making it harder to distinguish unique projects.
