Apple introduces sleep apnoea detection for Apple Watch in over 150 countries
On 16 September, Apple introduced a new watchOS 11 update that includes an important health monitoring feature - sleep apnoea detection. This option is now available for Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in more than 150 countries and regions.
Here's What We Know
The countries where the new feature is already available include the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and others. To check the availability in your country, you can visit the official Apple website. In several English-speaking countries, such as Australia and Canada, the feature is not yet available due to regulatory delays.
Sleep apnoea is a serious condition in which breathing stops periodically during sleep. The new feature uses the Apple Watch's accelerometer to track small movements of the wrist that may indicate breathing disorders. If these abnormalities occur frequently over several nights, it could be a sign of sleep apnoea.
Users can view the nocturnal breathing data in the Health app on iPhone, where the results are classified as "elevated" or "not elevated".
The innovation has been developed using modern machine learning methods and validated through clinical trials. It is important to note that it is designed to detect moderate to severe sleep apnoea in adults who have not yet been diagnosed with the condition.
Apple has also received FDA approval to introduce this feature in the US.
The new Apple Watch Series 10 will go on sale on Friday, 20 September, while the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 were released last year.
