YouTube's new strategy: adverts now even when the video stops
YouTube has confirmed that it is now rolling out adverts widely when videos are paused on the platform. This means that users of the free version of YouTube will see adverts not only when a video is playing, but also when it is paused.
Here's What We Know
Ads when paused have already started appearing on YouTube's smart TVs and mobile apps. The video is reduced in size and moved to the left side of the screen, while the adverts appear in the right column. Adverts disappear when playback resumes or can be closed manually. A YouTube spokesperson said the company has received positive feedback from advertisers and viewers on this ad format.

The main purpose of introducing this ad format is to encourage more users to subscribe to YouTube Premium to get rid of adverts. In the near future, we can expect this format to become standard for all users of the free version of YouTube.
It remains to be seen whether the introduction of adverts on pause will lead to a reduction in the number of regular ad breaks during video playback.
