Saab to open new ammunition plant in the US
In a press release, Saab announced that it will soon begin building a new weapons plant in Grayling, Michigan.
Here's What We Know
The company did not specify what systems will be assembled at the new facility. However, the AT4, Carl-Gustaf grenade launchers and the promising XM919 grenade launcher fall under the description of "shoulder-fired ammunition" offered by Saab. The NLAW ATGM also fits this description.
According to the plan, construction will begin in the 4th quarter of 2024, and production will start in early 2026. According to preliminary information, the plant will employ a total of 70 people.
"Given the current global security challenges, it is critical for the United States to strengthen its national defence capabilities. Saab is proud to be working with the state of Michigan and the local community to create a world-class plant that will increase and modernise domestic production of munitions systems with our product portfolio," said Erik Smith, President and CEO of Saab USA.
The new facility in Grayling will be Saab's tenth U.S. facility, but the first to produce munitions.
