No-one escapes justice: UK police start using Soze AI to solve crimes

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in a variety of fields. Quite predictable use of AI capabilities is demonstrated by the UK police.

Here's What We Know

Law enforcement agencies of the county of Avon and Somerset have started using the Soze programme, which is currently at the testing stage.

This technology allows you to quickly analyse a huge array of information related to a particular crime (letters, messages, financial documents, accounts in social networks, fines and much more), looking for patterns and subtle connections in them. The system then analyses, draws a conclusion and gives the staff its verdict.

Of course, Soze can't replace an investigator's mind yet, but the police are pleased with the result and see great potential in AI to solve crimes more efficiently without the need for additional staff and with reduced time frames.

Gavin Stephens, chairman of the UK's National Police Chiefs' Council, characterised Soze's work this way:

'You might have a cold case that just looks impossible because of the amount of material and you load it into a system that can just gobble it up and then give you a score. I can see this being effective.

Experts warn that you should not rely entirely on AI conclusions, as such programmes often provide incorrect information and sometimes even make it up, but such technology can be used as an idea generator that identifies chains of logic and can do a lot of routine work in no time at all.
