HoloLens 2 goes down in history: Microsoft shuts down production and development of AR devices
Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of its HoloLens 2 AR headset. According to information from UploadVR, the company has no plans to release follow-up devices, which means the end of this product line.
Here's What We Know
Microsoft has notified its customers and partners that this is the last chance to purchase the headset before stock runs out. However, the HoloLens 2 will receive updates to fix critical security issues and software bugs until 2028. The original HoloLens will stop receiving software updates as early as 10 December this year.
This decision comes as no surprise considering Microsoft dropped plans to release HoloLens 3 as early as 2022. At the time, Alex Kipman, head of mixed reality, claimed that the HoloLens platform felt great and rumours of its closure were greatly exaggerated.
The HoloLens 2, released in 2019, was aimed at enterprise customers and did not reach the mass market. The device failed to compete in the market and Microsoft stopped developing the entire mixed reality line last year.
