There is a lack of people willing to join the Ukrainian Legion in Poland
The Wiadomosci newspaper, citing the country's defence minister, said that the Ukrainian Legion in Poland had not received enough volunteers to form a unit.
Here's What We Know
"The creation of the Ukrainian Legion in Poland is a big question mark. We are not responsible for the recruitment, but the number of people who should have volunteered on the Ukrainian side is too small," said Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysh.
At the same time, he noted that Poland remains ready to train Ukrainian soldiers and has already trained about 20,000 people since the beginning of the war.
"We are not responsible for recruitment. However, the number of people who were supposed to volunteer on the Ukrainian side is too small. At the beginning, the claims were very high, that even one brigade could be formed, that is, several thousand people. However, this did not happen," explained Kosinyak-Kamysh.
This summer, it became known that the Ukrainian Legion might be created from citizens who have moved to Europe. The formation of the unit is envisaged by the security agreement signed in Warsaw on 8 July. The security agreement also provides for the training of this unit on the territory of Poland.
The agreement states that people living in other countries, not only in Poland, will also be able to take part in the training process.
The participants will agree on the procedure for selecting, training, manning, providing weapons, equipment and ammunition, as well as on the social and financial support of such military personnel and their status of stay in Poland.
By the way, according to Eurostat, as of January 2024, about 4.3 million Ukrainians live in the European Union. Of these, about 860,000 are adult men.
