Surgeons remotely performed endoscopy 9,300 kilometres away from the patient using a PlayStation controller

Medics continue to use modern gadgets to perform various procedures. For example, recently a PlayStation controller helped to perform endoscopy remotely.

Endoscopy was carried out on a pig, which was located in Hong Kong. The surgeons, in turn, were about 9,300 kilometres away - in Switzerland.

The procedure used a robotic system and a magnetic endoscope connected via a direct WebSocket protocol for real-time data transmission. The Swiss surgeon operated the endoscope using a PlayStation 3 Move controller. A PlayStation 5 controller was also used, judging from the demonstrations.

The surgery was a success. One of the key achievements of this experiment was maintaining a latency of less than 300 milliseconds, which is critical for real-time surgical control. This level of response is comparable to traditional surgical settings.

Admittedly, there are nuances - such surgery requires a fast and reliable internet connection.
