NATO plans to deploy 49 more combat brigades, each with about 5,000 troops, to prevent Russian aggression in Europe.

Here's What We Know

The Welt publication cites documents received from the Alliance. The plan also includes an increase in ammunition and precision weapons. According to the plan, the number of ground-based air defence units will be increased by 5 times - from 293 to 1467.

It is also likely that NATO will increase the number of combat corps from 6 to 15, and division headquarters from 24 to 38.

"A reversal of the plan is undesirable, as it would call into question the credibility of the Alliance," the report says.

In addition, the document presents the so-called "minimum capability requirements" (MCRs), which were defined by Christopher Cavoli and Pierre Vandier, NATO's top commanders. The MCRs will be distributed among all member states to help build military capabilities.

Welt recalled that the new NATO chief, Mark Rutte, said that his priority is to support Ukraine and protect the Alliance itself from Russia.
