Cold reception: Joker sequel grossed only $40 million in the first weekend in the US
The Joker sequel was a failure. The low ratings from critics and audiences indicate that almost no one liked what the authors did, although the first film was very popular and even grossed more than $1 billion, and Phoenix won an Oscar for his role as the Joker. What is the box office situation with the new part of the story about the criminal Prince Gotham?
Here's What We Know
During the first weekend in the US, the film grossed $40 million. For comparison, the first Joker grossed $96 million in the same period. Such a start is a disaster for Warner Bros. The sequel costs $200 million (the first film was made for $65 million). So, according to analysts familiar with the film's finances, Joker: Madness for Two needs to raise at least $450 million to break even.
The film grossed $81 million at the international box office, so the Joker sequel has earned $121 million in total. Now it remains to be seen whether the film will be able to at least recoup its budget.
