Armenia wants to buy a Korean K2 tank because it has 100 Soviet vehicles in total
Media reports claim that Armenia began talking about purchasing a K2 main battle tank from South Korea during a visit to that country in September 2024.
Here's What We Know
This was reported by the Defence Express media outlet with reference to the media. They explain that the main advantage of the K2 tank for Armenia may be its adaptability to combat in mountainous conditions.
At the same time, the question of Armenia's real ability to purchase these tanks, as well as South Korea's willingness to supply them, remains out of discussion.
As noted by Defense Express, this situation is more like a "media intrigue", as it is not about official statements, but about "leaks" that appeared in the press.
Among those who spread information about Armenia's possible desire to purchase K2 tanks from South Korea were Azerbaijani media, the Army Recognition portal, which cited the South Korean press, and ZBiAM, which cited information directly from Armenian sources.
It is also interesting that Azerbaijani media say that even if Armenia purchases K2 tanks, it will be an "unprofitable" deal. They point to future difficulties with logistical support for their maintenance, as well as to the fact that the Armenian army's armament is gradually becoming a "zoo" due to the wide variety of equipment from different manufacturers.
Available data suggests that Armenia may indeed need to acquire additional tanks, as it has only 100 units - about 100 T-72s, five T-55s, three T-54s and one T-90S received from Russia as a "prize" for participating in the "tank biathlon".
However, the question of the resource base arises, as Armenia's defence budget in 2023 was only $1.3 billion. However, the very fact that such reports appear in the media speaks volumes.
