It will be harder to cheat: YouTube now has a marker to help distinguish "real" videos from AI-generated ones

Generative artificial intelligence is becoming more advanced and is already creating videos that many people perceive as real.

To avoid potentially deceiving viewers, video hosting YouTube is introducing a new option.

Here's What We Know

YouTube has started to see marks underneath videos that indicate that the video in question was filmed on camera. This mark indicates that no AI was used to create the video.

YouTube uses the C2PA standard to identify "real" videos - this feature will only work with recording devices and tools that support metadata.

Authors will continue to be able to edit and edit their videos, but tools must support C2PA 2.1 or higher for the mark to appear.

Uploaded videos will be verified by Truepic's digital content authentication service.

The decision is another move by Google to increase transparency in media content and increase trust between viewers and video creators.
