Peugeot is working on Hypersquare, a next-generation car steering wheel with touchpads and additional functionality
Peugeot is working on a new generation car steering wheel that could change the whole concept of modern car driving.
Here's What We Know
In 2012, Peugeot surprised car enthusiasts with the i-Cockpit system, which offered a new steering wheel shape and a different arrangement of instruments on the dashboard: the controls were placed for the first time above the reduced steering wheel, which is no longer round.
Initially, the i-Cockpit system, like everything new, was criticised, but Peugeot insisted on its own and now it is standard equipment in most cars of the French brand.
Now the company is offering something completely new.
Hypersquare is Peugeot's new car control system. The steering wheel has finally moved away from the usual shape and now it is a rectangle, similar to the steering wheel of a Formula 1 car.
The Hypersquare measures approximately 33 by 20 centimetres and the device resembles portable gaming consoles such as the Steam Deck. The steering wheel has a central display and four large round holes at the corners, the bevelled inner parts of which form a touch surface for thumbs. The display also has four round areas with touch-sensitive control menus for Start, View, Drive Mode, and Gear Select.
Most operations are done via the steering wheel display, suggesting a smaller dashboard. It is likely that information about speed, speed limit, navigation and other important data will be displayed on a small panel above the Hypersquare and thus it will be in line with the i-Cockpit concept.
In addition to its changed form, functionality and aesthetics, the Hypersquare supports innovative electric remote control technology. Thus, there is no longer a mechanical link between the steering wheel and the wheels - everything works via electronic commands.
Peugeot has not yet revealed in which car model Hypersquare will debut. If rumours are to be believed, it could be the next generation Peugeot 208, which will be unveiled in late 2025.
