Boeing considers selling space division amid financial difficulties

Boeing is exploring the sale of its space division, including the Starliner spacecraft and projects supporting the International Space Station (ISS).

Here's What We Know

The decision stems from a number of problems the company has faced, including fraud allegations related to the 737 Max crashes and technical difficulties with Starliner that left two astronauts stranded on the ISS for months. This week, a satellite manufactured by Boeing for Intelsat stopped working and crashed through an "anomaly."

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said the company should focus on its core businesses of commercial aircraft and defence systems. However, Boeing is likely to continue to control the Space Launch System, which will help return NASA astronauts to the moon, and retain its commercial and military satellite business.

Significant changes are expected in the coming months as the company continues to lose money, with losses of $6.17bn in the latest quarter and forecasts of further losses in 2025.
