The EU has found a way to override Hungary's veto on military aid to Ukraine

The European Union has found a plan to provide money to Ukraine for military aid and to override Hungary's veto. However, France and Germany have expressed doubts about the plan.

Here's What We Know

The European External Action Service has proposed a new approach: to allow member states to make voluntary contributions to the European Peace Fund, which finances military equipment, including for Ukraine. This could help to override Hungary's veto, which is blocking more than €6 billion in aid to Ukraine.

In addition, not all countries support this step. France and Germany have expressed concern, fearing that setting such a precedent could jeopardise the future of the European Peace Fund, Bloomberg reports.

Currently, the fund relies on mandatory contributions from member states, and unanimity is required to provide funding. Voluntary contributions may require the approval of national parliaments in some countries, which complicates the process.

France and Germany have so far refrained from making official comments. For more than a year, Hungary has used its veto to block financial aid to Ukraine, forcing EU countries to look for alternative ways to support it.
