On Instagram, the quality of a video will now depend on its popularity

Instagram has started lowering video quality for unpopular videos. Adam Mosseri, (Adam Mosseri) head of Instagram and Threads, explained that the platform aims to show the highest quality videos, but if a video does not gain views for a long time, its quality is reduced.

Here's What We Know

According to Mosseri, this decision is made on an aggregate level, rather than on an individual level, so as not to affect the quality of videos for individual users. He also noted that more popular creators receive videos in higher quality due to more intensive encoding and expensive storage of large files.

However, Mosseri emphasised that the difference in quality is negligible and has little impact on viewer engagement. Some users have expressed concern that this approach could create an advantage for popular authors, but Mosseri assured that in practice it doesn't matter much, as engagement depends more on the content of the video than on its quality.
