EU checks iPadOS compliance with DMA regulations: Apple at risk of billions in fines
In April, Apple was recognised as a platform with significant market power under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). This obliged Apple to open up iPadOS to third-party app stores in the EU, just as it had done with iOS.
Here's What We Know
The European Union has given Apple a six-month deadline to comply with the new DMA rules for iPadOS, which ended on 28 October.
The European Commission told Reuters that it has begun assessing iPadOS's compliance with DMA rules following Apple's commitments. The antitrust watchdog noted that the Commission will now scrutinise whether the new version of the platform complies with the DMA obligations based on stakeholder input.
According to the DMA, Apple must allow users to install any default web browser, as well as alternative app stores.
In case of violations, the company may receive a fine of 10% of its global annual turnover, which could result in billions of dollars in losses for Apple. Therefore, Apple is actively trying to meet EU requirements in this area.
