Apple may receive its first fine for breaching the EU Digital Markets Act this month

Apple may receive the first ever fine in the history of the European Union for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA) this month, Bloomberg reports.

Here's What We Know

This happened after Apple did not allow app developers to direct users to cheaper offers outside the App Store. The EU first accused the company of breaking the law in June.

The fine can be up to 5% of the company's average daily turnover, which exceeds $1 billion. This penalty could be imposed before Margrethe Vestager leaves her post as competition commissioner later this month.

Apple has already begun to comply with the DMA by rolling out changes with iOS 17.4, including a reduction in App Store fees. In August, the company also announced changes to the default settings for browsers and apps. Despite these steps, the European Commission continues to review the compatibility of Apple's products with the DMA. The company is confident that its changes are compliant and will continue to cooperate with regulators.
